In his latest interview with Grassroots Cricket, Pakistan’s left-handed opening batsman, Imam Ul Haq shares his views regarding the captaincy of Babar Azam.

Babar Azam was named as the captain of the Pakistan team in 2019 and after that, he was handed over the captaincy of the Pakistan team in all three formats of the game and he has responded well to this responsibility.

In his interview with Grassroots Cricket, the left-hander Pakistani opener, Imam Ul Haq was asked to describe Babar Azam as a captain of the Pakistan team.

As we all know, Imam is the best friend of Babar Azam since his U-19 days so his opinion does matters and is the right man to describe the Pakistani captain because he’s been watching him for a long time.

Imam Ul Haq thinks that Babar Azam has been changed quite a lot since he was handed over the captaincy and there has been a huge change in the nature of previous Babar Azam and now because he has transformed himself into a great leader as he knows, how to go about his business.

‘’ The Babar the captain previously, the Babar the captain now, it’s like, to be honest, it’s a very different thing. He has groomed himself into a captain, I cannot express my feelings in one word because it’s gonna be very difficult. I will say A Great Leader ‘’, he added.

Imam further believes that Babar Azam has some good managerial skills as he knows how to treat his players because every player requires a different treatment but he understands everyone. He is a great leader who knows how to get the performances from his players.

‘’ I will end up on these things that he knows how to manage players because every player thinks differently and every player has their own egos. Every player, special the fast bowlers have their own egos. He knows how to treat Shaheen Shah. He knows how to treat Hassan Ali and he knows how to treat me. He is a Great Leader who understands the game and his players very well ‘’, he concluded.

The left-handed opener of Pakistan was criticized heavily when he was added to the Pakistan team, because of his relationship with Inzamam Ul Haq, but he also mentioned that Babar Azam supported him hugely when he was going through so much media pressure and this is what he will always be thankful for because he believed in him.

Babar Azam as captain of the Pakistan team has captained Pakistan in 71 T20i matches, 26 ODI matches, and 18 Test matches – he has captained Pakistan in a collective of 115 matches and has a winning percentage of more than 60 in international cricket for Pakistan.

Even though there were many speculations in the media when he was announced as captain of the Pakistan team but now Babar Azam has led Pakistan to the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup, the Final of the 2022 Asia Cup, and Pakistan also played the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Babar Azam. He is also Pakistan’s most successful T20i captain and has an extremely good record in ODI cricket as well.

  • Babar Azam’s next assignment as captain is to lead Pakistan in a two-match TEST series against the Srilankan team in an away tour – this Test series will be a part of the upcoming World Test Championship and will be played in July 2023.
