WHAT IS THE MEANING OF MANKAD IN CRICKET? DETAILS ABOUT THIS RULE?

Cricket is known as a gentleman’s game, and it is called so because it is to be played inside the rules and regulations of the MCC committee, one of the biggest issues nowadays was about the ‘’ MANKAD ‘’ in cricket as it was named as an unethical thing or against the sportsman spirit but now MCC has clarified on all these speculations about Mankad and here are all the details about this term in cricket context;

WHAT IS MCC?

MCC are the ones who are supposed to decide all the rules in cricket, the full form of MCC is Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) known as the guardians of the cricket laws and in this members of different countries are included to finalize any new cricket law or any update in the previous law.

WHAT IS MANKAD?

Mankad is an attempt to run-out made by the bowler to dismiss the batsman who is at the non-striker end before the ball is delivered, it was not in the laws of cricket earlier but now it has been included in the category of run-out and can be done if the non-striker leaves his crease before the ball is delivered so the bowler has this option to run his out at the bowler’s end.

MANKAD IN MCC LAW:

Mankad is now a very big debate that whether this should be legal or not in cricket as it ends the sportsman spirit but now according to the new rules and regulations by the MCC, this practice known as ‘’ MANKADING ‘’ which was previously considered as an unfair practice under the MCC’s LAW 41, has now changed and is now included under the LAW 38, termed as run-outs.

IS MANKAD LEGAL NOW?

As written earlier than it was previously considered as an unfair thing to do in cricket but it was never illegal, but now after there were many cases of this type in the recent past MCC decided to do some changes in the cricket laws and from now on it is fairly legal as well, MCC has given this MANKAD a legal option and is now called as a simple run-out, the difference is that it’s just done by the bowler at the non-striker’s end before the ball is delivered.

ORIGIN OF MAKAD:

The origin of this run-out at the non-striker’s end, MANKAD was done way back in 1947 during the INDIA’s tour of AUSTRALIA, the first MANKAD in cricket was also done by an Indian player, Vino Mankad who dismissed a batter Bill Brown before he delivered the ball at the non-striker’s end and from here on this practice was referred as ‘’ MANKADING ‘’ in cricket context.

DON BRADMAN ABOUT MANKAD:

One of the biggest names in cricket when it comes to batting, Don Bradman wrote his autobiography in which he gave his viewpoint about the MANKAD in cricket, he said ‘’ For me, the laws of cricket make it quite clear that the non-striker must keep within the ground until the ball has been delivered ‘’ and if someone doesn’t follow this rule and is ran out by bowler at his end then for Don Bradman it’s his fault and there is no harm in doing so, he made his point quite clear in his book.

THE NEW LAW OF MANKAD:

As told earlier, MCC has made some changes in the cricket law related to Mankad and now as per the new laws of cricket, ‘’ if a non-striker is not in his crease at the moment when the ball is being delivered, the bowler is permitted to attempt the runout at non-striker’s end ‘’ and if he succeeds in this process, it will be totally fair and within the rules of the cricket.

To save this thing for being more complicated, in the latest amendments to the laws of cricket, this has also made sure that from now on getting a batsman out at the non-striker’s end before the delivery of the ball by the bowler will now be considered as a run-out in the match.

LATEST MANKAD INCIDENTS:

  • The first incident that was very highlighted in the world, was when it happened in 2019, Ravi Ashwin – the Indian spinner ran the English batter ‘’ Joss Buttler ‘’ out at the non-striker end in an IPL game and this thing got so much hype around the world.
  • It was recently happened again by an Indian player, Deepti Sharma, the Indian women’s player did the same in a game vs England when she dismissed a batter ‘’ Charlie Dean ‘’ in a thriller to win the match for India, this thing again got so much hype from the media about whether this was fair or not but because this is now within the laws of the game, umpires gave this a simple run-out at the end.
