HASARANGA EQUALS THE WORLD RECORD OF WAQAR YOUNIS

HASARANGA EQUALS THE WORLD RECORD OF WAQAR YOUNIS:

Srilankan star leg-spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved a remarkable feat, playing in the 2023 World Cup qualifying round has equaled the world record of Waqar Younis.

Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved this record of getting three consecutive five-wicket hauls in ODI cricket, he becomes the second bowler in the world to achieve this milestone after the legendary pacer of Pakistan, and it’s been 33 years since Waqar Younis achieved this same milestone in ODI cricket for Pakistan.

The Srilankan spinner achieved this milestone on Sunday during the 2023 World Cup Qualifier between Ireland and Srilanka but still, this unique record of Waqar Younis took 33 years to be equaled and who knew that Hasaranga will be the one who will be the second bowler in the world with three consecutive five-wicket hauls in international one-day cricket for his country.

Srilanka who failed to qualify in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 directly has to play the Qualifier round of the tournament to get through the World Cup and while doing so, Wanindu Hasaranga has achieved this special milestone against the likes of UAE, Oman, and Ireland.

In the last three matches, Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three consecutive fifers against UAE, Oman, and Ireland. This record performance helped his team to claim those important points for the qualification of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. His bowling spells in the last three matches to achieve this great record are as follows;

  • IN THE FIRST MATCH AGAINST UAE, HASARANGA BOWLED 8 OVERS AND PICKED UP 6 WICKETS BY GIVING AWAY JUST 24 RUNS. HE HELPED HIS TEAM TO BUNDLE UAE BATTERS IN LESS THAN 200 RUNS.
  • IN THE SECOND MATCH AGAINST OMEN, HASARANGA BOWLED 7.2 OVERS AND PICKED UP ANOTHER FIFER, HE ENDED UP WITH FIGURES OF 5/13 AND PLAYED A CRUCIAL ROLE TO RESTRICT OMAN TO LESS THAN 100 RUNS.
  • IN THE THIRD MATCH AGAINST IRELAND, HASARANGA PICKED UP HIS THIRD CONSECUTIVE FIFER IN THE WORLD CUP QUALIFIER. HE BOWLED HIS QUOTA OF 10 OVERS AND ENDED UP WITH THE FIGURES OF 5/79, AND HELPED HIS TEAM TO DEFEND THE TARGET OF 326 RUNS.

The star leg-spinner has won man-of-the-match awards in two of these three five-wicket hauls, he picked for his team in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.

Pakistan’s legendary pacer, Waqar Younis also gave a similar performance 33 years earlier against the likes of New Zealand, and the West Indies during his playing days.

The toe-crusher of Pakistan picked up three consecutive fifers for Pakistan and was the only bowler in the world with this unique record till Wanindu Hasaranga equaled this record with Waqar Younis in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. His figures in those three consecutive fifers are 5/11, 5/16 against the New Zealand team, and 5/52 against the West Indies team.

Every team had the option to qualify directly for the 2023 Cricket World Cup after performing well in the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup Super League but Srilanka failed to grab this opportunity as they ended in the 10th spot in the points table, and now this is the last chance for them to be in the top spot after the World Cup Qualifiers and qualify for the World Cup 2023.

Wanindu Hasaranga has been a match-winner for Srilanka in the 2023 World Cup qualifier so far and in three matches he has played so far in the World Cup qualifiers, he has bowled a total of 25.2 overs and has picked up 16 wickets as well in the tournament. He just averages just 7 with the ball in this tournament for the Srilankan team and this will give Srilanka hope that they can still qualify for the World Cup 2023 because only two spots are left in the World Cup later this year in India.
